Built on Warmth, Guided by Purpose

The story of how a small community in northern Thailand became a place seniors call home.

Our Story

Chang Haven began in 2017, when a small group of long-time Chiang Mai residents recognized something missing in the area: a comfortable, community-oriented place where seniors from different backgrounds could spend time in the Thai countryside without the formality of a resort or the clinical feel of a care facility. The idea was simple — create a space that felt like a veranda gathering among friends.

The founders, each with years of experience in hospitality and community development in Southeast Asia, found a property along the Mae Rim-Samoeng Road. Surrounded by green hills and set back from the main road, it was exactly the kind of quiet, scenic setting they had envisioned. The first guests arrived for a weekend retreat in early 2018, and the response was warm enough to confirm that this approach had a genuine place in people's lives.

Since then, Chang Haven has grown at its own pace. The community expanded to offer seasonal three-month stays and full-year memberships, while the core idea has remained the same: everyday life here should feel unhurried, socially rich, and grounded in the culture and landscape of northern Thailand. Our staff — many of whom have been with us since the early days — speak multiple languages and take pride in knowing each guest by name.

Today, Chang Haven hosts a small, diverse group of residents and visitors who share a common appreciation for good conversation, good food, and the kind of daily routine that leaves room for both activity and rest. We're not trying to be the biggest community in Thailand. We're working to be the one that feels most like home.

Our Mission

To offer seniors a thoughtful, non-medical residential community in Thailand's countryside where social connection, cultural engagement, and day-to-day comfort are central to the experience. We believe later life should be a time of discovery, companionship, and gentle rhythm — and we shape everything we do around that idea.

Relationships between residents and staff are the heartbeat of everything that happens here.

Rooted in Place

The local culture, landscape, and traditions of northern Thailand shape our programs and daily life.

Guest information is stored securely and never shared with third parties. We comply with applicable Thai data protection regulations and international privacy standards.

Hospitality Certification

Chang Haven is registered with the Chiang Mai Tourism Bureau and adheres to Thailand's accommodation standards for service quality and guest wellbeing.

Environmental Responsibility

We prioritize local sourcing, minimize waste through composting and recycling, and maintain our gardens using organic methods — reflecting the natural landscape we're part of.

Living Well in Northern Thailand

Northern Thailand has long been a destination for those who appreciate a slower tempo, a warm climate, and a rich cultural heritage. Chiang Mai, in particular, draws people from around the world — not just for its temples and markets, but for the way daily life here seems to invite reflection and enjoyment in equal measure.

At Chang Haven, we've built a community that draws on the strengths of this setting. Our guests wake to the sounds of birds and gentle breezes, share meals made from ingredients picked that morning, and spend their days among people who genuinely enjoy each other's company. The activities we offer — from tai chi and pottery to temple excursions and language practice — are not filler. They're chosen because they bring people together and help each person feel connected to the place they're living in.

Our staff members are more than caretakers — they're neighbors. Many grew up in the Mae Rim area and bring their own knowledge of local traditions, favorite restaurants, and hidden trails to share with residents. This kind of personal connection is what sets community-based living apart from simply renting a room somewhere pleasant.

For seniors who value independence but appreciate the company of others, and who are curious about life beyond their home country, Chang Haven offers something simple but meaningful: a place to belong.
